The GF is wanting this car we found. 1999 Ford Escort with 135,000. New transmission, new brakes, new tires, new radio. AC and heat work. Drives good and stops good. No leaks. Body is a bit beat up, but solid. The mechanic selling it wants $1500 cash, but she doesn't get her tax refund until the 15th or so. What should we do? I can scrape up $1500 if I have too, because this car isn't going to be around for long.

Hmmm ... $1500 for a 13-yo beater with 135K mi? I'm thinking you may end up putting more $ into parts he hasn't refurb'd ... Like the engine.

I'm trying to decide if 50 is old. ...

So scared of getting older, ...
Fear not ... Yesterday I returned from Tampa where I played with a 55+ team in the ISSA World TOC (I'm 65). We played AA, ran the table ... 6-0 ... I hit .750 but was only 5th highest avg on the team. We got to swing senior bats like the UltraII and Rebok Melee. SEE WHAT YOU HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

She can't spend more than $1800 right now. What should I look for? The other used cars we have looked at so far have had 140,000+ and everyone wants $5k.

I got tossed from a game and league today. I had been filling in about every other week. Two weeks ago the LD asked for my ID and made me sign a waver. Did not say anything else. Today when I spoke with him he asked my age and I told him 53. I now can not play at all in the league as it is 55 and older, damn :(

I thought it was a 50 and older league. The guy who recruited me knows how old I am and about half the guys in the league know also......
I dont anticipate getting that much older in one year, I can play next January as I will be 54 in September, its not like I am a ringer or anything. Lotsa guys there are much more skilled players than me. But I did not know I was illegal. They have a hard time getting enough players.

Not a bad car but its old enough that if the engine goes its junk. Get a Toyota or Honda......
Sorry to say that............... but its true.

An illegal in Cali? A good case in point for SB being a microcosm of real life.

But seriously, hope you can find somewhere to play (or get a Dominican ID)

It is your responsibility to know the rules and abide by them. It is the responsibility of your manager to do the same for the whole team. A team has a collective integrity that is the sum of the character of every member. You and your manager cheated, pure and simple. There should be sanctions.

Character is what we do when no none is watching and integrity is a matter of vigilance. (I'm sure someone else said at least half of that but I cant find who or when)

Then again, if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

I was boondoggled, LOL, by my 73 year old coach, guess he does know more than me, LOL. The funniest part is I did get carded two weeks before and I showed him my ID and signed an insurance waiver. I honestly believed it was 50 and older. I cant help if the league directer can not read my license, and I told him my age, LOL.

Thinking about buying a moped/scooter. Anyone have any experience with that sort of thing?

I have never heard of these guys before. With any of the smaller companies you really need to make sure that someone in you area will work on it for you or be able to provide you with repair/service parts down the road. If you are not able to get any support it will not be worth much.

They are supposed to be pretty good for the money. They run $1700 and less. So hopefully he can hook me up with a good price.

So, in my ongoing epic tale of cars and bad luck...

Last Wednsday, I was leaving my internship and just as I accelerated to get on the four lane state highway, my car died in the oncoming lanes. Thankfully, everyone had enough time to stop and there wasn't an accident. Ended pushing my car into a parking lot and having it towed. My mechanic had it most of the weekend, and basically we found out that the wiring harnesses that were recalled on this car were never replaced on mine, and we're long out of the recall limit. If you can actually even find the wiring harness, they're $2000. He has it running again and couldn't recreate the problem as much as he tried, so at least it's working. Basically told me it took them about 5 hours of labor to end up at the intersection of "what the hell" and "damn it." On the bright side, he refused to charge me for the 5 hours.

Fortunately no wildlife or people were hurt. This was with the "new" car too?
