every day I'm shovelin'
Well, I *thought* I knew this rule, but apparently not.
I'm on 1st. Slow roller hit to 3rd. Runner is slower than the ball is hit. Defense attempts to turn the double play. I beat the throw to 2nd, and am called safe on the play. SS gets the ball from 3B and throws to first wildly. Ball goes out of play.
The umpire said since I was still on the bag and not attempting to move to third when throw was made I only get one base. So at the end of the play, I end up on 3rd and the batter ends up on 2nd. Now, I *thought* that it's 2 bases from the time of the throw - but that may have just been the simplified interpretation I've always heard, where the verbiage of the rule is a bit more verbose and specific.
What is the actual rule, and was the call made on the field the correct call?
