ASA Batter Crossing Home Plate

For starters, I hate using a game clock for softball. I understand why it is necessary, but it leads to way too much stupid shenanigans.

Late in the game, home team is trailing with less than 2 minutes remaining and 2 outs in the bottom of the inning. The batter takes his position in the batter's box, waits for the pitcher to step on the pitcher's plate, and walks across home plate in an attempt to be called out. There was some confusion on this play, specifically with regard to timing. Can someone clarify the exact details (and citation) of when a batter is called out for crossing home plate?

Just swing while stepping on home plate, batter gets called out right away.
Pending he/she makes contact... I have seen any people try this and miss and think the inning is over but have to tell them it's just a strike.

The batter is out as soon as they cross to the other batter's box with the pitcher in position. There is the option to declare a forfeit at that point for employing tactics to noticeably hasten or delay the game.
