ASA caught fly/foul ball then carried into dead ball territory

Situation: Runners on 1st and 3rd, less than 2 outs. Shortstop catches a fly/foul ball and then unintentionally runs out of play.
1) What is the ruling and what bases are awarded?
2) do runners have to go back and tag if they left the bag before 1st touch/catch and does retuning to tag up count as an awarded base?

1) The ruling is Dead Ball for carrying the ball out of play. The award is 1 base for any runners.

2) Runners must legally complete any awarded bases so YES, if they left their base before first touch, they must retouch before completing the award. If they do not, they're subject to being put out on appeal. Returning to tag up does not count as an awarded base.

You'd see this more frequently on fields where fences are lacking. "Out of play" would mean the fielder crosses an imaginary line extending straight from the end of the backstop fence. It's a judgement call for the umpire, which means someone's gonna be butthurt about it in the end. OP may have been on the butthurt side, hence why he's asking the question here.

ASA Rule 8, Sec 5, para J - question 1) foul fly ball, batter is out, unintentionally fielder carries ball out of play, one base awarded for all base runners, umpire allows 2) when ball and player enter dead ball territory, umpire allows runners to return, if needed to properly tag up, umpire then directs runner(s) to advance one base

if the fielder had INTENTIONALLY carried ball into a dead ball area, same rule except para K - all above stays the same EXCEPT two bases are awarded

still don't get it. if it's not declared dead ball, play is still alive, isn't it? what's this talking of award and all?
