How Do You Handle This?

No runners on base, with 1 out. Batter hits a long single to the outfield. B/R rounds 1st base. Ball comes in to SS. As Base Umpire comes inside for the buttonhook he/she slips and falls down. SS throws behind the runner at 1st base while umpire is on the ground looking up at the sky. Base Umpire has no clue what the call should be. What should he/she do?

Hopefully the PU is doing his job & backing up the play! The BU should just have to point & ask the PU, "Waddaya got?"

Isn't that the PU's call anyway? It's a throwback to 1B. And with no one else on base the PU should definitely be watching the play to cover for his partner.

In USA Softball, it’s still the BU’s call.

Call the runner safe, don’t guess the out. Then call time and talk with the PU.
