Other Illegal pitch

If the umpire notices something causing an illegal pitch by the pitcher... Should he:

1. visually indicate this (hand out to the side) and let the pitch play out allowing the offense to have a choice.

2. Verbally stop play calling "dead ball" immediately upon seeing the violation.... Since you can't hit an illegal pitch.......this is what I have seen happen a couple of times but in think is incorrect.

BTW this is more HS softball
Thx

Different sanctioning bodies handle IP's a little bit differently. But since you specified high school softball...that narrows it down.

As soon as the umpire sees the IP infraction, he should give the "delayed dead ball" signal (left hand fist extended out to the side) and verbally state, "Illegal".

The play should be allowed to continue (batted ball, wild pitch, base on balls, whatever.). Then at the end of the play the offensive coach has the option of choosing the results of the play or enforcing the illegal pitch penalty.

There are times where you might call a dead ball immediately, if no pitch is delivered. One would be if the pitcher licked her fingers then touched the ball without wiping off (kill it right away) or if the pitcher starts her motion and then stops it before releasing the ball. But if an illegal pitch is actually delivered, it can be batted into play.

That is along the lines of what I was thinking but have seen it called other ways.
