1 out, runner on first. pop up over 2nd basemans head, he gets a glove on it, it bobbles a bit up in air, lcf'er makes the catch. runner continues to 2nd base. throw to 1st base for the double up. batter is called safe at second as the bobble took away the need to tag up.

i thought it was the correct call, some guys on the team thought not.

At what point in time did the runner last touch first base? Before or after the 2nd baseman first touched the ball?

he was 1/3 of the way waiting to see what would happen. once the ball hit the 2nd basemans glove and bounced out, he took off for 2nd.

He needed to be on the base when the fielder touched it I believe. Then once the bobble started he is gtg to leave.

Runner must be on the base at the time of, or after, the defense first touches the fly ball. At this point, he is free to continue to the next base. Since the runner was off 1st base at the time of first contact, and did not return to re-touch the base, he would be out upon the return throw to 1st base.

This. ^ The runner has to tag up until the ball is first touched, a bobble does not mean the runner doesn't need to tag up.

Bad call...runner should have been out on the live ball appeal at first for leaving early on the catch.

That covers it, You can tag up at any time after 1st touched by the defense. This negates the controlled bobble strategy. In your scenario, your runner was kind of in no mans land, but since it was evidentually caught for an out, he has the responsibility to tag up at first, sometime after ball was touched, in order to safely advance to 2nd.

Agreed. The runner was out because even though the person who made the initial contact didnt make the catch, the catch was still made. If the runner was standing on first at initial contact, then he is safe. Since you said he was 1/3 the way between 1st and 2nd and never touched 1st again... runner is out.

Softball/basesball 101.

From T ball, thru softball all the way to the MLB, runners must always tag up.

They can advance after first contact but they do have to tag up.
