Other NFHS "Giving yourself up"

Batter hits a lazy fly ball to LF, sees the LF camped under it, and takes a step toward the dugout before LF loses the ball in the lights and drops it, whereupon the batter runner proceeds to first. Umpire calls BR out for "giving himself up". Correct call or mistaken overcall?

Only rulebook I could find was an '11 one, and 8-2.4 states that it's an out if the BR enters the team area. Is that still correct? No local rule to supersede the rulebook FWIW.

There has been no change. Same for ASA.
This rule usually is discussed after an uncaught 3rd strike and neither BR or defense reacts to the play - AND the offense occupies the 3B dugout.
BR can walk all the way to the edge of the dugout, and then cut across the infield legally.

Bad call. Batter-runner isn't out for "abandonment" until entering a dead ball area.

swing the bat put your head down and run watch base coach to see if you should run through base or round it. Who cares what the rule is, Why didnt the runner just run it out?

Because it is 60-70 feet. And nobody wants to run just for fun. No glory, no run.

And that has what to do with the call being incorrect?
