Pitching Gear and Safety

Just buy hockey goalie equipment and when you pitch run towards the batter.

Let's just say I was young and stupid, but back in late 70's and 80's I would always step toward the batter. Drove them crazy. Made a lot of outs and knocked down a lot of balls. All stopped when some guy showed up with a $300 double wall. I thought there was no way most guys could afford to get one. By the end of that summer, that was all anyone ever swung.

If anyone has HUGE calves, the Adidas Ghost Guard XL shin guards may be a valid solution if you're looking at soccer style. I've been using Nike Mercurial Lite XLs for the past few seasons, and those fit great. I got the Ghost Guards to try something a little different. The pads themselves are about the same, but the sleeves are a lot bigger.

Can you post a pic of yours? There are so many different ones shown when I searched, so I want to be sure I get the right ones.
Thanks

The ones that do fit well, though mine are a few years older:

The ones that the sleeve is too big. The pad itself is almost identical... maybe a slightly softer cushion.

My calves are ~ 16 1/2".

I think I'm doing the broomball shin guards this year. soccer shin guards are too small, imo, but it's better than nothing, I guess

My calves are 18" so do you think these will fit?
Thanks

I think they would be close. They stayed up when I was walking, but as soon as I started running around the infield they slipped. I definitely don't think they'll be too small.

i got the evoshields in their largest size. i think it's just the size of the guard that changes, not the sleeve in this case. they don't slip and i've taken a direct shot and they held up really well. i like that they form to your legs when you get em and i just marked them for left and right.

I have been wearing umpire shin guards for about 3 or 4 years now. I am looking for some new ones with a little more protection, and that is a little more comfortable to play in. Any suggestions?

Worth mask vs Combat mask vs Schutt vs Champro vs Rip it.

I tried the Rip it, and it was a bit too big for my face yet tight in the top strap....I just ordered the Champro and Schutt. Was looking to order a Worth and combat but they seem to be harder to find. Need a place with a good return policy, any recommendations?

Let's bring this back to life and see if anyone has found any new equipment or improved versions to add...

Rawlings Zoombang seems to have some interesting stuff...

I got some Gray's Field Hockey shinguards and they work really well. I was afraid they wouldn't stretch to accommodate my calves but they do.

Honig's makes these: http://honigs.com/sport/baseball-softball/shin-guards/softball-soccer-shin-guards.html

IMO, these are much better than a set of full umpire shin guard an they fully protect your shins & don't restrict your range of motion at all. I use Diamond Sport's LG-5018 leg guards which are exactly the same but are no longer made. Combine them with a pair of compression knee pads & you're good to go. I have 2 different sets for my knees. A generic set that copper infused & a set of Xprotex Deflectr's which I really love. I also have a Blockr forearm guard but I rarely use it.

There are also these variations:

Dang dude...I hope there isn't permanent damage, looks like a rough recovery.

Start shopping and good luck on the recovery.

Went and seen a plastic surgeon/face specialist.. my cheek is broken in a few spots but nothing is out of place that warrants surgery.. now I gotta keep it safe to heal .. so no ball for a few weeks.. might not pitch for the rest of the season.. or atleast until post season. It actually hit so hard it also fractured the opposite side slightly. And left the stitching on my cheek. And this is "rec" league.
Thank god it wasn't an inch or so in any direction father, still have all my teeth, eye sight, nose, and all my brain cells.

So if anyone is on the fence about using a mask like I was..
do it.. buy one.
That was scary as sh*t. And now it hurts like hell.

You were extremely lucky. To not have eye damage, require surgery, or even lose teeth is very lucky where you were hit. I know you don't feel thankful now.

What ball?

I'm definitely thankful! I know how close it was to being wayyyy worse!
It was a super grey dot that was being used. The league didn't leave us any league male balls(L.S 24nsy) so we used my team balls.
Thanks to all the well wishes.
