Past weekend at a tournament I got to be scorekeeper for a D rated team. Unsure of how to score these scenarios.
1. Guy tries to poke a ball backside past the second baseman. Second basemen playing up takes a few steps back and jumps up to catch ball and it goes off glove and runner runs it out to be safe at first. I know the whole routine play rule for errors but not sure if this play would be considered routine since fielder was playing up. Ball was not hit super hard almost like a blooper. Hit or error?
2. Ball hit high in the air and CF loses it in the sun. When CF finally finds the ball he runs and dives for the ball but misses it completely (did not hit glove) If fielder did not lose it in the sun it should have been routine.
Hit or Error?
I ended up crediting both plays with a hit but just wanting some feedback.
My thinking behind both plays being granted as a hit is you can not control the weather conditions or where you line up defensively so it’s a hit but would love feedback if anyone disagrees.
