Hitting on a downward angle compared to the ball flight so that it creates back spin.......you "cut" the bottom half of the ball off.

Okay, that's what I've thought. I've been doing it lately with my swing and my line drives are definitely coming off a lot harder and flying a lot further.

I'm not sure how much it would affect the speed on your line drives compared to hitting it square. However, it does certainly help the ball carry more.

Wouldn't hitting a ball square cause it to knuckle, thus making it less aerodynamic? If so, then cutting the ball and creating backspin would in fact affect the speed on his line drives.
