those who have broken a gear

or maybe know more about them than i do... listen up.

i have an OG gear, it has a wicked vibration in it. just hitting in lower on the bat than the SS and you can hear it. mis-hit the ball and it lights you up like 220V. what is inside that could rattle or vibrate like that? its LOUD if you bang the taper with your wrist. hit it in the SS vicinity and no abnormal sound.

any ideas? its a NR bat, so no COMbat CS love. it freaking SMOKES the ball for being fairly unbeaten. id say no more than 300 on it for sure, probably no more than 200.

i am not above dissecting it by any means. id just like to know if its something i can fix or if its in the composite.

above the gears, if you hit it with your wrist it rattles/vibrates. hitting it i cant tell if its barrel or handle. how does the handle weight work?

Handle weight is in the handle, and acts as a counterbalance to the weight of the bat itself and the endcap. When you say above the gears, you mean towards the endcap, right?

ahh, i cant reproduce it on video, its something you have to feel.

what is the handle weight, meaning, what does it look like? id divulge some information i have but im afraid it might be against SBF policy concerning balt altering. the vibration seems to be in the handle/taper. is there a sleeve in the barrel in these that could be loose?? it makes a nasty vibrating sound when it hits the ground.

okay. bat used to belong to a buddy of mine. it was a return for a busted OG Gear. has had this wicked vibration/buzzing in it from day 1. dude thought it was "the rubber band" and drilled out the endknob and pulled what he could of it out. he put it in his closet and forgot about it until the other day.

i went through (and am still stuck in) a broken bat stint and he brought me this OG Gear to swing. the knob was drilled out like a donut, and spun on the handle. i installed a new roll pin and puttied it up like stock. bat SMOKES the ball if you hit it in the face, but mis the SS slightly and it really rocks your hands.

so my questions are:

what is the "rubber band"? ive never seen or heard of this.

what is the handle weight? how is it made?

is there a sleeve in the barrel of the bat?

to me the bat is a freebie, i spent $50 on it, its a NR, and it doesnt matter if it breaks or is deemed illegal IMHO. i want to be legit with it, but i got it with a hole already drilled (1" hole mind you) through the knob, so i cant F it up any more.

if i can fix the bat i will. ill swing it until im told to stop. but i will not shave/roll/alter the bat in any way other than to fix the rattle/vibration/buzz if at all possible.

bat would make an awesome gamer eventually, but if i need to only swing it in BP i will. bat only have around 200 swings on it.

There is simply a rod that they install in the handle to adjust the bats balanced or endload feel. In the old days, guys used to remove them on the PST's to drop the weight and make the bat more endloaded feeling. Not to common nowadays.

You just bought a 50 bp bat.

i made it. its not hard. i had pieces of the old one, i just used the waste of a pop-rivet and cut it to size. it wasnt a roll pin per-say, rather just a piece of metal to told the knob still on the handle. knob is good to go, i just need to counter-sink the end for a sticker so it looks like a stocker. any person who knows COMbats would spot it a mile away, but to anyone else they wouldnt know the difference.

is there a rod on the handle of COMbats? i have no idea. ive never seen this "rubber band" thing, either. i didnt see a rod in the handle of the bat, though.

DAMN, you have cracked one bat a month!

flipping tell me about it. oilslick has me beat, though!!

okay, so i was out in my backyard hitting the softball up in the air ala Tiger Woods. the ball jumps off of the sweet spot, but when i get above or below the sweet spot you can hear it vibrate. you can feel it vibrate in your hands. it buzzes. when you throw the bat towards the dugout or let it hit the ground, you hear it buzz as the knob hits the ground.

so when i was fixing the knob of this bat, i was amazed at the handle being hollow, or so i thought. looked to me to be 5/8" ID, but i didnt shine a light down in it. my main objective was to fix the hole, keep it from spinning, and make it look decent. is the handle not infact hollow? is there a weight in there?

that's fine, you can say that if you want, it doesnt bother me. i know the bat is now altered, i knew it when i bought it.

it isnt glass. it hasnt been rolled. but it has indeed been altered.

but, i would like to fix the issue, so if you could help with that, great.

Sounds like someone removed the rod if you can see all the way through to the barrel. On a combat it's in the handle not the knob. If you have a camera you could try to post pics...

I haven't taken mine out. Do I want to? Should I want to?

I wouldn't, A) it's altering.. B) it's probly the reason the bat feels like **** when mis-hit. Would it be worth it to injure someone and be held responsible over a drilled out handle/ possible rod removed?

ive puttied over the hole already. i didnt see anything, but i didnt peer in. could only see in an inch or so.

talked to the dude, and he said he didnt pull any weight out, only what he could get of the rubber band.

so none of the combatants know anything about the rubber band? or the sleeve?

i guess im just going to have to butcher this bat to learn.

okay. 4" into the handle there is a stop. it looks to be epoxy or resin, it isnt metallic that i can tell. i have been told by someone who would know that there is not weight there. i am not sure what the rubber band would be or do, but i dont see how or why it would need to be there.

i guess so. i thought with all of the huers in here and the fact COMbats break sort of easy that someone would have technical answers i could use to fix this bat.
