Walking the box is fundamentally wrong. Make the pitcher throw you your pitch. Don't hit his!

FUNdamentally wrong for baseball, not slowpitch! Haha nothings fundamentally wrong in softball if its fun. (Especially asian women)

In ASA I've seen a few really good hitters that walk the box and hit for a high average and power. I walked the box in late 2004 when I hurt my wrist and couldn't pull the ball due to being in pain. I've also had times where I've struggled popping up and walking the box helped keep me level & hit line drives. I haven't walked the box in a game since 2006.

If it's soooooooooooo awesome, how come you're not still doing it?

unlimited arc and walking the box:

first off, why are they wasting time running the bases on home runs and then having the whole team waiting at home plate for high fives like the ladies do in Fastpitch?

there were definitely some bombs hit and some good cuts in the video, but to me the walking the box part just looked like an inefficient timing mechanism. The only guy who had a smooth and simple approach with a consistently level swing was the lefty towards the end. Or maybe he was the only one doing it correctly. I'm not sure because I couldn't find any videos of major players walking the box.

^^^ polka music for a highlight reel? Is 0:35 considered "walking" because I think I have a similar step now that I look at it.

Again it has much less to do with timing than it does plate coverage. The strike zone is the plate plus the mat extension. You can see that these guys are starting with their back foot even/behind the mat and moving forward to cover pitches coming in at a steep angle towards on the plate. It's not asa/utrip and a strike has to hit the plate or mat. It's a completely different feel and look in the box as opposed you utrip where you can sit on your back leg and try and hit show bombs.

Everything you said is exactly what I was saying earlier about why I thought people do it, but Bballkking1 said walking the box with unlimited arc pitching has nothing to do with where the pitch might land, so now I'm confused.

And I mentioned the timing mechanism part because for a few guys in the video that's what it looked like they were doing. One guy even did the one-two-step, then stopped completely and did a leg kick...wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the walk up?

You're right.........We should be encouraging him to to practice something that none of the best hitters in the game do......So, that he can be more proficient using an approach that almost all successful hitters don't use. You're in innovator, and in encouraging him, I suppose you are helping.

Just so we're clear, I encourage all people not on my team to try and practice things that aren't proven and will likely lead to them playing worse. :D

Thank you for the variety of responses. I can honestly say that I am still a bit undecided, but I'm leaning more towards not walking the box. I agree that my pitch selection has just as much to do with my hitting as my swing. Does anyone know any good way to practice loading my back leg and weight transferring when I swing so I can use my hips more.

I've seen one of the very best POWER hitters in today's game walk the box to hit a ball down backside. Matter of fact the game was played on the 4 letter network in the USA vs. Canada game a few years ago. Greg Connell normally doesn't walk the box but he hit a scud down the first base line against Canada the year he played for USA.
