What sorcery is this?

Long story short I let a guy borrow one of my bats a few weeks ago, a Miken Freak LE and when I got it back this evening the barrel was covered in spray on adhesive. He assured me it would wash off. Is there a benefit to this, like having pine tar on the barrel of a wooden bat? Should I leave it on or wash it off?

I have heard that this helps in cutting the ball on your swing. Some leagues and tourneys it is illegal to have it on your barrel though. It just depends on how much they enforce it

"Tacky" adhesive will put a nasty back spin on the ball when the ball has been poperly "cut".

I have been playing in this area for 10 years and I have never seen anyone do that. Is this something I should be taking advantage of with all of my bats? Is it just any spray adhesive?

It is illegal in all associations.

He probably shaved it then.

I honestly thought that too so I was inspecting the end cap very closely. I didn't see any evidence of tampering. I'll see about putting the bat on a scale. I don't swing Miken's, I got 3 of them for free in sponsorships but ended up using them mostly as team bats for a season. No offense to the Miken fans, they're great bats but my preference is the Demarini's.

Clearly because I'm too trusting. I didn't know the guy too well, just knew him from seeing him around the fields ump'ing. He's an umpire so I just figured he'd be a decent person who would respect the gear and the game. He said he was interested in buying it so I let him use for a tourney he was playing in and after a week or so of me calling him I finally told him I wanted the money or the bat so I got the bat back. I'll certainly be more cautious in the future. Chalk it up to experience.

I am of the opinion that the ball is not on the bat long enough to make a difference, but that's just my opinion. It would be an interesting thing to test out on sports science or something. Best thing I've found to take this stuff off of a bat is WD40

You sure about that?, Rule 2, Equipment, Sec2 Official bat, letter L, number 4. Clearly defines no bat is legal for utrip play if a foreign substance is on the barrel or taper of the bat. Specifically calls out pine tar and stick-em products as examples of foreign substances. It defines it's illegal for a foreign substance to either add to the thickness of the bat or by obscuring Key graphics.

id make him clean it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) he's in jail right now. Turned out he was a real big POS and from talking to some other guys around the league I'm lucky I got my bat back at all.

Bat is for sale or up for trade if anyone is interested though.
