ASA 1st base double play

1 out, guy on 1st. Lindrive out to 3rd base who throws to 1st cause the runner took off. 1st baseman is standing on the orange base when he catches the ball. The runner dives back in before he gets tagged. The ump yells safe, he never tagged him. We laugh and say he didnt need to be tagged it was a force if he was on the white bag. He then calls him out on the force. The other team even said he was on the orange bag and the ump said he saw his foot on the white.

Is this for real....? Is an umpire that dumb? But... to the best of my knowledge in this situation there is no orange or white base. it's all considered one base....

First, it's not a force, it's an appeal.
Second, either portion of the bag may be used here. It's one big base.

Just curious.

Is this different in SPN. This weekend at an SPN tournament I asked the umpires about this (during lunch when we sat together eating). They said after the initial play, only the white bag is in effect.

this is NOT True the orange part of the bag is only there for a BATTER, if a fielder touches all orange with ball in the glove, the runner is NOT out as it is considered he missed the bag.

The safe bag is NOT considered 1 big bag,it is the same as if there was only a white bag there (same as they use on second or third base) if the guys steps 1 foots away from that bag the runner would not be out)...

He is correct, the orange part is considered NOT there once a batter/runner has touched the bag.

In USSSA or apparently SPN you are correct. For ASA which is stated in the subject line of this thread both the orange and white portions of the base are playable at all times by either side with the exception of the first play on a batter/runner.

Yes....it IS true for ASA. As stated above after the initial play, the base and safety base are considered one big base.

From what I can see in their book NSA only allows the fielder to use the orange bag on the first play on a batter-runner.

The fielder may tag the outside of the bag to record the out in this situation. This is only permissible on the initial play at 1st base.
But it is not very clear, IMO.

It is the same in NSA from everything I have read and been told. The orange bag is for the runner only. White bag for the plays.
