ASA Base running scenario

#1 There are runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. A ground ball is hit to the SS who flips it to 2nd to get the force there. The 2b throws the runner out at 1st. The runner who started the play on 2nd inexplicably does not move from the bag at 2nd. This runner was not tagged, simply stayed on 2nd. The defense thought this runner should be out, but the umpire ruled that once the force at 3rd was alleviated by putting out the runner going from 1st to 2nd, the runner that started at 2nd didn't have to go anywhere. Not knowing this rule for sure, the umps explanation made sense. I'm just not sure if it is right.

Sure, it was right. "Force out" means just that, an out on a runner forced. If any trailing runner or the BR is retired, no runner is forced to advance.

Correct Call

If the defender did not tag the runner standing on 2nd base before stepping on the base then the force was removed and that runner is no longer required to move off of the base.

Runner on 2B is safe. Ump explained it perfectly.

Since, at the time of the hit, 2B runner was not protected by the bag, 2bman should have tagged him before he touched the bag and contined for the triple play.

I have seen it more often at 3B with a hard shot. 3B runner will have no real chance to score so he just stands there, on the far side of the bag and waits for 3B to touch the bag, then reaches out and puts his foot back on the bag.

So, if the 2b tagged the runner standing on the bag before touching the bag to get the force on the incoming runner, both of them would be out?

exact same thing this weekend.. ump was confused.. but the coaches of both teams talked it over and the right call was made.
