Any Baserunner standing in front of infield line drive/fielder

Playing first last week, the runner came off the bag a few feet, saw it was a liner and held his position. I literally had to put my glove over his shoulder to make the grab. He is an experienced ball player, knew where the ball was going. It was a third out, but if it wasnt there was no way I was going to be able to turn or get to the bag to get the double.

If I couldn't make the catch due to him being there could we contest? What if I had made the catch but he kept me from getting the ball to second what would be the case?

It's an umpires judgement call as to whether the runner interfered or not. It would only be protestable if you got the umpire to admit the runner interfered but didn't call it for some other reason.
