so my fiance was playing this weekend and the umps were horrible. thats beside the point. on a couple check swings the ump would ask the field umpire, on his own, if the batter swung or not. i catch for my fp team and have never had an ump appeal it on his own. they usually waited til i asked them to check it. was he right in doing this??

That's not rare in our mens fp league. Umpires usually appeal to the umps before we even ask them too mainly because they know we will ask.

An umpire may ask for help on his own. He should only do this if his view was blocked or he really could not tell from his position or angle if the batter offered at the pitch.

Totally within his/her right to ask his/her partner. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.
