How would you determine upper/lower brackets

Everyone is starting out in 1 division, from there the tournament will be split into upper and lower divisions.

How would you go about determining which teams belong where?

Overall record

?

?

?

Thanks

Definitely record, runs scored, margin of win/loss.

The only problem I have with 'runs scored' is if a team pulls a no-show (yes it happens )....then we award the 7-0 win.

We usually do runs against as a form of tiebreaker.

Think runs for along with record could work. Record could be misleading as the two best teams could play each other first and one of them has one lose out of the gate, and then you could have teams that dont score as many as the could.

You can also make concessions for a strong team in a strong bracket and a weak team in a weak bracket. In 2009, my men's team played in a strong bracket and we went 1-2 in the seeding games, whereas this weaker men's team played in the weaker bracket and went 2-1. We were put in the upper and they stayed in the lower.

if you are using paid umpires maybe they could have a sliver of imput just to make sure nothing crazy happens

Are you doing Pool Play into single elimination?

Pool Play will allow you to determine Won/Lost then point differential.

2 game to determine seeding into single elim, but it would be basically 1 at large pool to start.....if that makes sense.

I have never played against or seen any of these teams before, so I am going into this with no idea what the competition level will be.

Rob, so do it this way.

Blind Draw first round of pool play.
Winner of first rounds play each other and Losers of first round play each other in second round.
This will give you a better idea of who really is lower and who is upper.
The teams that go 0-2 in Lower. The teams that go 2-0 are in upper. The teams that go 1-1 you look at who they beat and lost too and the run differential to determine where they should be placed.

PowerTek Performance Apparel & Lizard Skins Rep.
Strictly by the bat differential

ie...team A has 37 bats they are in lower division....team b....10 bats in upper division :D

Or you can go by # of guys over 3 bills on each squad

Will depend on number of teams. You could do brackets with a round robin. to a single elim.
or
everyone into a huge bracket. put all the teams that lose the first to games into a single elim consolitation bracket
