Mask Recommendations

The league I play in is finally starting back up after being down for a year, but they're requiring masks (thanks, COVID) and I figure I might as well get something I wear through a whole doubleheader comfortably. Anybody else playing with a mask have any recommendations?

For all the obsession over other gear, I'm surprised nobody's asked this question yet.

I'd personally go w/ a thin neck gaiter.

I know leagues here last summer had some requirements about no designs/patterns, so you may want to double check that.

But, the gaiter is easy on and off, less adjustment. Way quicker to pull it down and back in between crushing some beers.

For athletes, from runners to casual athletic events, the mask below comes highly recommended from many trainers/medical and physical therapists - Uniglo AIRism, 3 for $14.90, cloth and washable, S, M, L, XL all three in pack are same color, white, grey, black colors available

I hate the gaiters. They're way too tight. Maybe my head is too big. Even pulled down it's like a small turtleneck.

Thanks for the advice. After spending a couple hours looking for reviews on all the poorly-translated Chinese options on Amazon, I ultimately decided to go with the UA mask from the SBF store. I also picked up an Oakley one from Amazon that has dual straps going around the back of the head to keep it secure (it's just a single layer of thin cloth, so I'll likely have a disposable surgical-style one underneath for actual protection).

I wanted something that would be more durable than the KN95s or homemade masks I've been using for the past year, and something I could potentially wear the whole time I'm playing. And taking into account the Rip-It mask I wear when I'm pitching I wanted something that should sit comfortably under that as well--I presume the KN95s wouldn't fit under the Rip-It.

Once I'm actually playing games in a couple weeks I'll report back with any noteworthy observations.

Wearing a mask while doing a physical exercise is very dangerous. I have just been playing pick up games and nobody wears a mask.
I pulled my 8 year old out of softball because the league is requiring masks, why do little children need to wear masks????
But if you really need to wear a mask I advise the fish net ones. It’s basically not a mask but looks like one. You will have zero oxygen blockage.

This thing is weird, people err on the side of caution a little too much. Each position is many feet apart. If you’re really doing it for protection, the n95 and surgical masks are the only ones that offer protection. The cloth ones offer protection for other people if you’re sick but otherwise it’s just for show

Lol your an idiot. It’s science you dumb ****

Hahahaha! Bill Nye? Is that youuuuu, bud?

Feel free to show me any factual evidence that supports your BS statement that wearing a mask while exercising is dangerous.

How pissed is your kid at you for making this stupid decision to take them out of softball?

masks restrict oxygen levels, less oxygen in the bloodstream. That can be dangerous for some ppl, especially kids.

go run around the bases as fast as you can with a mask then without a mask. Tell me how you fell huffing and puffing with a mask on. That’s all the proof you need

why aren’t professional players required to wear masks when playing?

and she actually is not mad at all. She gets more playground time now.

Masks don’t restrict oxygen. A molecule of carbon dioxide is about 0.00033 microns wide, and oxygen is about the same. No molecule that small will get trapped in a mask. The coronavirus is about 0.1 microns wide, almost a thousand times bigger.

You can’t do science, so how about math.

Lastly, if you’re huffing and puffing running sixty foot bases, your problem isn’t the mask.

Please stop posting stuff about covid and masks. This is the kind of stuff that keeps the pandemic going. Don’t do anything you don’t want to, but please stop spreading untruths.

well.. he's been ignorant about this all time. Don't matter if you present him a work of a novel prize winner, he will still deny. I know a person like that, my own sister. I don't know if they simply choose to be that dumb or just being a hardhead. Whatever it is, you can never change them unless they change themselves.

Please access info related to moderate to strenuous physical exercise in articles posted by the Mayo Clinic They are experts and their advice is “no negative or adverse effects for wearing masks during physical exercise and sports participation”. Their only suggestion is to use a polyester fibered mask or one that wicks moisture.

I hope you can believe what you think to be true, just know that most people, which include me, don’t want others beliefs forced upon us. And to the forum sheriffs I mean no political or social stance or negative speech toward anyone else.

If me posting my opinion about Covid and masks keeps a pandemic going then there is a greater problem my friend.

Keep your mask on, while you touch a ball that everyone is touching while sweating. Matter of fact doesn’t CDC recommend like 8 masks now? Mask up!!!!!!

Had my first league night in 18 months last week. Wore the Oakley mask last week, with a surgical-style disposable mask underneath since the Oakley material is really thin. The Oakley held in place well the whole night, while the disposable one underneath shifted around a bit while running the bases. Any issues with breathing were more due to me being fat and out of shape than anything mask-related. Both masks held up fine while pitching--I wear a Rip-It fielders mask for that. The Oakley mask felt a little tight against my face, but my big head was probably stretching the straps near their limit. Folks with normal-sized heads shouldn't have that problem.

I'm going to try the Under Armour one this week and see how it does. It felt pretty comfy the one time I've worn it out in public.

Wore the Under Armour mask last week, but did so without another mask underneath. Super comfy, didn't shift around much while on the field. It fit well under the Rip-It mask while pitching. Had some difficulty with sunglasses fogging up but I can probably work around that.
