League courtesy run rule states "Unlimited, but a player can only be used as a courtesy runner once per inning." First batter hits a clear single and stops on first. A courtesy runner takes his place. Second batter hits a clear single putting runners on first and second. The second batter, who is on first base, is replaced by the first batter,who was replaced with a courtesy runner, as a courtesy runner. Opposite team says not allowed. I know the rule is not in any book but as an umpire what do you decide?

Another rule open for all sorts of interpretation and people being not very smart just creates more confusion. Why on God's green earth would B1 get a sub runner just for B1 to go in to sub run for B2?

So does this rule mean that you can have as many sub runners as you like per inning as long as it's different people running? If so that's allowed, no?

I agree. we get only one sub runner per inning, and that is confusing enough for some of the brite ones on our team.

8.5(1) • USING COURTESY RUNNERS Any player on the roster and present may be a courtesy runner if listed on the official lineup. A courtesy runner may be used for a base runner at any time, but the same courtesy runner may not be used more than once per inning. Any courtesy runner found running more than once per inning will be called out. Any player on the team roster may be a courtesy runner; he does not have to be playing defense or in the batting order.

8.5(2) • USING A RUNNER ON BASE A runner who is replaced with a courtesy runner may not be used as a courtesy runner for the remainder of the inning.
