I do thumb to pinkie, but it's all about personal preference. It just so happens that most people (that I've seen, anyway) break the way the OP does.

It seems to me that many old school guys, or guys whose Dad's played ball, break their gloves in thumb to pinkie. Many guys, especially younger guys that I see, break them in fingers to palm.

The only place that ever made sense to me was pancake middle infielders. Outside of that, or mitts (that break in that way naturally), I've never understood it.
