I agree, but Lackey has been a solid starter the last two years and is signed through next year. It also frees up the outfield logjam the Cardinals had.

They traded a player that they saw fit to sign to a 6-year extension last year (a player who's averaged over .300 the previous 3 seasons) and a young pitcher who has held his own in their competitive rotation for a 2-3 month rental...
