Nose

Like i said beleive it or not but its legit. You guys are just idiots.

I suggest you go back and re-read your story before you start insulting people and calling them idiots for not believing your story. I've seen numerous broken noses in my years in contact sports (I won't turn this into a brag post by going into specifics) and have never, ever, seen anything like this, true, I haven't seen it all and there is a fist time for everything but this defies logic. Just look at it from our perspective; the bone had to brake off the face, thru the skin and imbed itself to the ball, there is no blood...Is it possible? I'm not sure, but I have my doubts. I do believe that your buddy got hit in the face by a softball (hope he heals well), seen it happen plenty of times, nevertheless, I'm having a hard time believing this. One question and I leave this alone, why didn't the attending physician preserve the bone for possible reattachment in the same manner they reattach appendages such as fingers and hands? The nose is mostly cartilage, like the ears but harder, that's the very reason that killing someone by hitting the nose in a upward motion is just an urban legend...not possible.

I am no physicist but I wonder just how flipping fast a softball would have to travel to actually have bone imbedded in it?

Actually, probably not very fast. Bone is pretty hard, and the bones around the nose are kinda sharp if they break.

Up and Over
Presuming this story is real --- BEST OF LUCK TO THE PITCHER --- my prayers are for him and his family during this difficult time!

^^^ Except the pitcher should have more than enough time to back up in UA ball, since the ball is in the air for a significant amount of time...you have enough time to move back at least 10' (closer to 15') and still ready yourself to field. Problem you see is that pitchers watch their own pitch instead of backing up and readying themselves.

With the constant rule changes, bat bans etc to make the game safer - why don't they adopt a mask rule?

Been thinking about getting a mask but I only pitch a couple games a year so didn't want to spend the money. It's time to spend the money, maybe i can talk our regular pitchers into wearing it if I buy it, chest protector to, okay, shin protectors, wrist protector, cup, etc,etc..... Hope he recovers, best wishes to him.

These threads should be titled: PITCHER FAILS TO PROTECT HIMSELF!

EVERY PITCHER --- LET ME SAY IT AGAIN --- EVERY PITCHER should be protecting themselves with their glove (by being in position with their glove up by their chest/chin area) during EVERY PITCH!!!!! There's no excuse for not doing this....

EVERY PITCHER --- LET ME SAY IT AGAIN --- EVERY PITCHER should be watching the bat hit the pitched ball --- with only .45 seconds to react after the bat hits the ball, EVERY PITCHER must use every part of that time to determine where the ball is travelling, react accordingly to either put your glove there or move your body out of the way.... THIS IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE!

PROTECTING YOURSELF requires that you safely put as much distance between you and the batter as possible before the hit, that you position your glove EVERY PITCH to protect your most vulnerable parts (face/heart/family jewels), that you put 100% of your concentration on the bat making contact with the pitched ball, and that you move yourself OUT OF THE WAY before reaching for the batted ball....

Pitchers are being hit because THEY are not taking these PROTECTIVE MEASURES!!!

IN ADDITION, any pitcher who feels it beneficial should get a mask --- today --- right now --- before you throw another pitch --- there's no excuse for not protecting yourself as necessary...

Very well said brother! Post of the year towards injured pitchers.

Mizuno. Next Question?
Best players in the world can get blown up... Easy on the pitcher should have protected himself! They slow pitch the ball.. They slow... Slow... Pitch the ball... Slow pitch! Have some bat control and take half the blame as a hitter! The best .. Go middle guys are usually outfielders. Plenty of good players can go middle without blowing guys up.

Wearing a mask is just there for accidents and the pitcher shouldn't relax his approach to setting himself and getting his glove up

as a guy who's been hit in the helmet this year.. as well as in the bare hand by a stadium ball i can tell you sometimes you just can't react in time. I feel like i do a pretty good job of playing defense in the middle..i've faced laser vision twice already this year as well as other major and A teams. normal zn you have a fighting chance.. but the stadium ball if it's not where you put your glove you don't catch it. so to those of you who say protect yourself sometimes your best effort, however good you are, isn't enough

Guy wasn't at the tourny. Dude is still in the hospital. Heard from a different guy it was a 12 inch ball and it was a piece of face bone wasn't sure if it was nose or not. That's all I got but it is bone in the ball.

I have seen people get hit, but nothing even close to that...hope he recovers well. This is why a lot of pictures wear a mask nowadays. Especially when playing upper division league ball and tourneys. I would feel horrible if I was the person who hit that shot to do that kind of damage...wow

Now you know why I wear a mask
