Do you guys get fitted for shoes or just use whatever off the shelf?

I started running about 9 years ago. I ran my first 10K in some shoes I got from a local sports store, and I had a terrible blistering problem. I finally went to a true running store, and they fitted me for something that was more inline with my foot... it was the best thing I could have done.

I wear the Brooks Ravenna ($99.99), and I never have blistering problems... and as you can see, they are affordable as well.

I have those right now too. They are awesome shoes and are nice because they come in EE.

I used to be an asics only guy but their quality went to hell snd the toe is too narrow.

drop the 1 or 2 handed? i'm thinking the 1 handed.

i might pick up a curl bar and some plates this week.

Do the one handed one day then next workout do the two instead of the one. I like to switch up all of my workouts every other time. Example: one chest day I'll do all barbell work, next chest day I'll do all dumbell work.

i'll eventually get a full setup. i went with dumbbells first because they are cheaper and so i can build up my overall strength before investing a bunch of money.

idk if that makes sense of not, but idc.

Once you get hooked, prepare to spend some dough on equipment. Still cheaper than a membership over time.

i'm fully aware of that. i have a 3k elliptical that i bought my wife that doesn't get used.

Ha. Ours gets used a lot by the wife. My mother in law has one of those expensive ass ones, it's a clothes hanger.

she used it a lot at the beginning but now it pretty much just sits there. i unplugged it 3 weeks ago when i moved it and the chord is still sitting there.

When you start to buy some ****, if you do, Craigslist is actually really good. I see Olympic plates, squat racks, and various benches on there all the time for very good prices.

that's my plan. it will be awhile until i buy all that **** tho, dumbbells will be fine for now.

more advice coming at you. i just ran my first actual race as opposed to training like i'm in a race. (practice the way you play or something...) I ran 18 miles and here's what i learned:

1) start really slow. you'll think you started at your desired pace but in actuality you're going WAY too fast!
2) don't stay home bangin' broads when you should be at Olive Garden stuffing your face the night before. you need those carbs!
3) 18 miles is 5 miles too far.
4) dress like its 15 degrees warmer than the forecast.
5) running behind a girl with a great ass makes the miles go fast!
6) when training, make sure you run more than the race distance will be, regardless of your pace. your lungs will be fine but your legs will be screaming every inch of the way beyond your farthest training run.

Hedge, you are correct. If you look at any reputable training plan you don't actually train up to the mileage that you are running in your race.

i read the same thing. the farthest i had ever run before this race was 15 miles. i wanted to get in 16-17 2 weeks before but i got sick. anyway, around mile 15 i started feeling it in the legs, but 16 really started to slow down. by 17 my feet were on fire and my legs were screaming. at 17.5 my hamstrings began to lock up an i honestly thought i was gonna have to quit 1000 feet from the finish line.

if i could do it all over again, i would have trained up to 20 miles before the race. my advice to you is to run 14 miles at least once before your half, even if you run it 1 minute per mile slower than your race pace.
