Came back from the sports medicine doc today and my MRI shows that I have a torn labrum in my left shoulder. My question for everyone is if you had the chance, would you go to the best orthopedic surgeon in the state or a really good one. My doc said the surgeon in Las Cruces is very good, it's one hour away. The best in the state is in Taos, 5 1/2 hours away. Both accept my insurance. I chose the one in Las Cruces but am second guessing myself now after coming home and reading about he one in Taos.

What would you do???

i would take more BP......:D

if it doesnt cost you any different to go to the best then why not, if you are happy with using second best then go for it. Im sure the other doc is well experienced.

I asked the same question a few years ago when I tore my rotator cuff: "Go to the referred orthopedic surgeon? Or go to the best guy in town?"

It was an easy decision because you can have someone GOOD or you can have the BEST.

This person is going to cut you open and remove a piece of an important part of your body, what do you think?

I'm curious as to why you even asked this question , is the drive too far in your opinion ? this is like a no brainer, i would go cross country if someone was known as the best at a surgery that i needed to have. Lucky for me i live between Duke and UNC so i never really have to go too far.

I would make the longer drive. The confidence factor alone would make me feel better about being able to playing again.

It's very tricky business. Even tho they say the other doctor is better isn't always true. I mean alot of surgeons r rated on post op infection and how they were cared for not always how good of a job they did. They r there to fix the problem not paint a art piece, most prestigious docs r slammed w patients day in and day out. Patients become things and he is just there to do his job. He most likely doesnt care if u ever will throw a ball comfortably again. I work in surgery as a surg tech/nurse and the prestigoua docs **** up just as bad as the less prestigous docs do. Especially when they t trying to beat another surgeons time. Yes some doctors do, that

If you were in high school you'd go to the nurse, get a bandaid and a halls & be GTG.

With my shoulder I was sent to the doctor who did my knee for a check up, and to look at my shoulder, but he diidn't look at the shoulder. He is also a really good surgeon. I got really lucky and was sent to The best shoulder surgeon in the Province. Everyone who I've talked to says there is one doctor to see when in comes to shoulders, and even better is he also works for the Vancouver Canucks hockey team.

Good, better, best?!?!? Who cares? Just open up the yellow pages, close your eyes and point. Whatever name you point to will be good enough. They are just doctors.

Just a question. Is there a good specialist in El Paso you can see or does it have to be in New Mexico?

One thing to consider is a 5 and 1/2 hr drive home when you're in a lot of pain isn't gonne be fun. If the local DR is good, then I would consider it. when I had my ACL done the 20 minute drive home was no fun, I can't image sitting in a car for a 5.5 hr drive.Just something to consider. A lot of how your performance after surg. depends on the rehab. proper rehab goes a long ways.

I had a torn labrum also and had it done here in albuquerque at NM Orthopedic. Everything turned out good, been a couple of years and don't have any problems.

I'm going to see Dr. Guttman in Taos/Santa Fe. He's the best orthopedic surgeon in the state. Hopefully I have a good outcome. It just an orthoscopic procedure but I've never had any major surgery before so I'm a bit nervous. Glad it's happening after the season though. Have my first appt. with him next Wednesday.
